Art Supplies FAQs

What is the difference between professional and student quality art supplies?

Student art supplies are a little more inexpensive. The pigmentation in student supplies is not as deep as professional supplies.  This gives the student a little more room for error and makes it a little bit more cost effective for the classroom. Professional art supplies have rich pigments and are not as forgiving, so the artist working with them should be proficient in that medium.

Do I need to have a brush in every size for my art supply inventory to be effective?

No. Often an artist will find themselves using only one or two brushes that give them the stroke and texture they are looking for. But it is a good idea to have two or three backup brushes in those favorite sizes.

Do I need different paper for the different kinds of paint?

A. Yes. Watercolors need a paper that can tolerate the moisture used. Oil paints are best used on canvas that has been primed, otherwise oil stains may appear. Acrylics will generally work on any thick paper, but it’s best to look and see what mediums the paper is meant for, often painters won’t use paper at all and will stick with canvas.
